Experiences During the Purification Cleanse

People often wonder if I actually practice what I preach. The answer is.. Sometimes! I am just as flawed in diet area as some of my patients. Unfortunately, due to a busy lifestyle etc. etc. excuse excuse… Bottom line is that we all make choices in life. Once I choose to start eating breads, cheese, chocolate, and any of my other favorite foods it is difficult to stop. The result of such choices? For me my immune and digestive system start to go to pot, and my joints start to hurt.

January 2, 2013 my husband and I chose to start the 21 day Purification Cleanse. The following excerpts are my experiences during it. I hope that as the reader you find the information useful and possibly amusing. It is a little daunting to post the information online for all to read. I want my patients to know that I do practice what I preach, and if I can do it so can you.

1/2/13 Day 1
It is the day after the new year, and let me tell you did I pig out last month! The shakes (that you take 2 x’s a day) are not bad at all. You can put them in a smoothie and barely taste it.

1/3/13 Day 2
Ok.. so after 1 day of freezing cold smoothies 2 x a day I am turning into a phlegm ball. This says to me is that my poor digestive system is a little sluggish. Big shocker there! Possible ideas on how to cut all the cold foods? Making some homemade apple sauce (with ginger and cinnamon) and mixing the shake in it while it is still warm.

-Update- Applesauce now looks like something the dog barfed up. It is edible and a possibility but I think I will continue my search.

1/4/13 Day 3
Holy Gas!! Although, I am having the “perfect poop” frequency has increased from 1 to 2 times a day. I am gassy and bloated. This says three things to me. That my digestive system was worse than I thought, that all that fiber is doing me some good, and that my body has now entered detox.

Also, because of all the fiber and supplements I feel like I have been licking wallpaper paste.. Be sure that you are drinking lots and lots of water! You will notice that as you mix your powders in the morning it absorbs a lot of water and has a thick consistency. Imagine what it is doing inside if you are dehydrated.

Today I tied the powdered “shake” by itself. I don’t recommend it. You would have a better time trying to drink glue. The reason why it is so thick is because it is all natural. You will notice that you can actually see the fibers in the powder.

I am seriously craving breads right now… but the thing I miss the most is the cheese.

1/5/13 Day 4
Gas is not as bad today (thank God!) The search for something less cold to mix the powder in continues. Also, because my husband doesn’t always like the texture of kale or spinach the search for a vegetable alternative is now in the works.

Today we tried V8 (or V8 equivalent) as the liquid part of our shake. It was do-able.

We also tried orange juice (can be used as a last resort) as the liquid part of our shake. It was do-able as well.

** If you choose to try either one of these for your “smoothie” be sure to by organic orange juice with out any added sugar, or V8 (equivalent) with low sodium. V8 low sodium still has a lot of sodium per serving. I would use less than 8 oz per serving and cut the rest with water if you still need more liquid.

*** Hint*** If you mix the powder in by hand AFTER you put your smoothie through the blender it is less gritty.

Overall, I am sleeping better at night. I have less pain and I have more energy.

1/7/13 Day 7
Today I tried my smoothie with a Naked Juice Green Machine. Yum! Ok.. so it looks like vomit, but it was actually good. One Naked Juice (small) will last you for 3 smoothies. If it is to thick you can cut it with water.

The last two days the gas/bloating has decreased.

New developments… Starting yesterday I started getting a lot of pain in my hips, knees, and low back. I am associating it to my body detoxing. These are all areas that tend to hold on to a lot of stress. Starting today I am going to start incorporating some yoga and stretching.

1/18/13 Day 17
SO.. You may notice the huge gap in the day log. Nothing really remarkable has happened. I am still feeling great. Cravings happen but are manageable.

I tried the pumpkin smoothie they recommended in the guidebook… Gross…

My husband has lost over 10lbs. Me? I have gained 2lbs.

Here is my thought on this… Your body needs to be a certain weight in order to maintain healthy functions. I am going to just go along for the ride. I am feeling great even though I went through a couple of days of detox. Also, with it being winter I tend to hold on to weight a little more than I do during the summer.

I am willing to bet the weight will come off when it is ready to.

1/22/13 Day 21
Well the cleanse is over. I am still feeling great. The weight I put on did come off in the end. Now to start introducing foods back into my diet.

    1. Hi Megan,

      I did not have any headaches or chills. However, everyone is different. This particular cleanse is not very harsh, and therefore the side effects tend not to be as severe. Which is OK! Some people believe that in order to have a successful cleanse you need to feel awful the entire time. You may feel some fatigue or muscle aches in the beginning, but unless you are allergic to the supplements that’s about it. The other nice thing about this particular cleanse is that if you feel you are particularly “toxic” you can do the 21 day cleanse take a month off then do the cleanse for another 21 days.

      If you find you are having headaches or chills try drinking more water, or making sure you are eating more cooked vegetables instead of raw.
