History Reiki Energy Healing Technique:

The Style of Reiki at Calandra Center for Health and Wellness

At Calandra Center for Health and Wellness, the Reiki taught and practiced follows the lineage of the International House of Reiki, a tradition that strives to reflect the authentic teachings of Mikao Usui (Usui Sensei) during his lifetime. This lineage has been deeply researched and lovingly preserved by Frans Stiene, who has spent decades studying Reiki energy healing and its historical roots — and continues to do so today.

The Origins of Usui’s Teachings

Around 1912, Mikao Usui (Usui Sensei) began teaching what he called Usui Duo (Usui’s Way). During this period, many teachers in Japan were exploring and sharing various forms of energy medicine. Thanks to cultural exchanges along the Silk Road with China, concepts such as Qi Gong and acupuncture were widely discussed and integrated into Japanese healing arts. You see aspects of Qi Gong in some of the meditations practiced within Reiki.

What set Usui Sensei’s teachings apart was their spiritual foundation. While many focused on techniques for healing the body, Usui Duo centered on how one could transform emotions and develop personal strength in daily life. Over time, Usui Duo evolved into what we now call Reiki — from Rei (spiritual) and Ki (energy).

In this context, spirituality was not tied to religion or dogma. Instead, it emphasized the understanding that you are the spiritual aspect, the very expression of universal energy itself. Ki is the same vital energy recognized in “Qi” — the life force that connects all beings.

The Heart of Usui’s Teachings

Usui Sensei recognized that everything is energy — and that since we are all part of this universal energy, we are all one. Each student walks a unique spiritual path, growing and developing at their own pace. To support this, he created tools and practices tailored to individual needs meaning that no two students learned exactly the same way. This is why some students learned aspects that others didn’t.

Usui Sensei wove Buddhist philosophy and practice into his teachings. His approach emphasized personal practice — including meditation, chanting, and study of the Reiki Precepts — as a way to uncover one’s True Self.

A Path of Personal and Spiritual Growth

Studying Reiki is more than learning a healing technique; it is a journey of self-discovery. The practice helps you reconnect with your inner light, reminding you of your true nature. As you grow spiritually, your energy naturally becomes a space of healing — an open invitation for others to awaken their own healing power.

Reiki is seen as a synergistic energetic dance. Healing happens not through the practitioner’s will, but because the client’s energy rises to meet a higher frequency, aligning with what serves their highest and greatest good. There is no giving or receiving — only unity and flow. And as Usui Sensei taught, healing others begins with healing oneself.

Deepening Your Reiki Practice

If you are already a Reiki practitioner and feel that something is missing from your current practice, this traditional Japanese lineage may fill those gaps. Out of reverence, we refer to Mikao Usui as Sensei, meaning “teacher.” Mikao Usui actually had many names that included birth names, artist/style names (goh), popular names, Buddhist names, and/or posthumous names (戒名kaimyo/imina).

The Reiki Precepts

The Reiki Precepts are not specific to Buddhism.  Please do not feel that because you are Christian or any other religion that you cannot practice because it is based in Buddhism.

The Reiki Precepts

Do not bear anger

Do not worry

Be humble

Be true to yourself

Show compassion to yourself and others

The Reiki Precepts truly form the basis of most religions and spirituality. These simple yet profound principles are tools for finding peace, balance, and your True Self.
