History and Styles of Reiki Energy Healing Technique:

Usui Reiki Ryoho – Reiki Energy Healing Western Version

There are two styles of Reiki energy healing: the most commonly taught and practiced form of Reiki in America was passed down from Mikao Usui (Usui Sensei) to Hayashi Chujiro who then passed it on to Hawayo Takata who brought it back with her to Hawaii where it spread like wildfire. Takata realized that many of Usui’s students studied with him for years. It is believed that Takata, thinking that this lifetime of study was not palatable to the population of the United States, adjusted many of the teachings.    This style of Reiki is most commonly associated with attunements that “tune” you in to the Reiki energy, thus making you a conduit for Reiki healings.  It relies strongly on symbols (Tibetan in origin) to amplify the work being performed. These symbols are taught during Reiki Level 2 and Level 3 when you learn how to send distance healings.

This style is highly effective and very powerful.  The practitioner is not generating energy, it merely flows through them.  The client’s body is the one that dictates the frequency of energy that they receive (commonly around 7-8hz).  Once you have been attuned to the energy you are able to utilize it right away. It does not require any types of meditation or self-reflection.  William Lee Rand, whose lineage is derived from Takata, is one of the top authors on this style and has developed a style all of his own.

There are generally three levels of training: Reiki Level 1, Reiki Level 2, Reiki Level 3.

Usui Reiki Royho- Traditional teachings of Usui Sensei via Frans Steine

The second style of Reiki taught and practiced at Calandra Center for Health and Wellness is a lineage that is taught through the International House of Reiki, and aims to reflect the practices that were taught by Usui Sensei during his lifetime.  Frans Stiene has spent many years extensively studying Reiki energy healing and its lineage, and continues to do so.  Stiene quickly realized that not all of Usui Sensei’s students were taught in the same way. Each student was on their own spiritual path of growth, and did not develop at the same speed. Usui Sensei, being aware of this, developed tools to be of aid along the way. Some students required different tools, and that is why some of his students learned things that others did not. Usui Sensei was a lay Buddhist monk, and this is reflected in Usui’s teaching style.  In this style there is a large focus on personal practice.  A practitioner learns specific meditations, and studies the Reiki Precepts to develop a full understanding of True Self. It can be argued that one cannot understand an energetic practice without personal development.  With this style of Reiki energy healing, the practitioner becomes the energy. Healing takes place not because the practitioner dictates it, but because the client’s energy rises up to meet the higher frequency at whatever level is for their highest and greatest good.  Healing others starts with healing oneself.  If you are already a Reiki Practitioner and you feel that something is lacking from your practice, this style fills in all of the gaps. You may notice that I refer to Mikao Usui as Sensei, meaning teacher.  I do so out of reverence and respect towards him and his teachings. Mikao Usui actually had many names that included birth names, artist/style names (goh), popular names, Buddhist names, and/or posthumous names (戒名kaimyo/imina).

The Reiki Precepts are not specific to Buddhism.  Please do not feel that because you are Christian or any other religion that you cannot practice because it is based in Buddhism.

The Reiki Precepts

Do not bear anger

Do not worry

Be humble

Be true to yourself

Show compassion to yourself and others

These Reiki Precepts truly form the basis of most religions and spirituality. The precepts are tools to be used along the path to finding true self.

The levels are:  Shoden Reiki I, Okuden Reiki II, and Shipiden Reiki III
