What is Reiki?

Reiki is a technique used to reduce stress and promote relaxation.  It was developed over 100 years ago in Japan by Mikao Usui (August 15, 1865- March 9, 1926).   His family lineage is derived from the Samurai, and he was brought up Tendai Buddhist. Later in life he became a lay monk.  Unfortunately, there is a lot of dispute as to the true history of Usui Sensei and how the technique was developed.  The one thing that people agree on is that Usui Sensei was Buddhist and although you do not need to be Buddhist, or believe in it, the foundations of Reiki can be found in Buddhism.

  • Rei – spiritual or sacred
  • Ki – energy

Almost every culture has some concept of energy.  The Chinese refer to it as “Qi”, Quantum Physics refers to it as “Universal or Biomagnetic Energy”, and the Japanese refer to it as “Ki”.  It is the “life force energy” that flows throw all things.   Reiki works to balance this energy.  When Ki is balanced and in harmony you are less likely to get sick, feel stress, and are more capable of being happy and healthy.

Reiki works to treat the whole person including the body, emotions, mind and spirit allowing for the body to feel relaxed, at peace, and secure. It is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that anyone can use or learn.  It also works well in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.  It has even been shown to decrease healing time after surgery.

It is not dependent on intellect, spiritual beliefs or faith making it easy for anyone to learn. While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use this healing technique. In fact, this healing method is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not.

What to expect during a Reiki session?

Your session may be a distance healing or in person.

For distance healings prearranged agreed upon time will be set. During that time the client will be at home in a safe quiet place preferably laying down. The practitioner will then send the Reiki treatment at the agreed upon time.

During an in person session the client will be able to unwind in one of out comfortable relaxing rooms.  The practitioner will either have their hands slightly above or gently placed on the client.  Generally, the areas of focus are head, throat, upper/ mid chest, abdomen, hips, knees, ankles and feet on both the front and back of the body.  Please be sure to communicate with the practitioner if there is an area that you feel uncomfortable about.

Common sensations include: Warmth, cold, tingling, seeing colors, a feeling of peace, or a deep sleep.


Clinical studies have shown:

  • Reiki healing is capable of lowering cortisol (stress hormones).
  • Practitioners of this healing technique generate between 7-8 Hz. It is the Hz that cause a healing response. – Zimmerman (1990) in the USA and Seto (1992) in Japan
  • In 2008 the Department of Defense started using this Japanese healing technique in combination with acupuncture, massage and other methods to help with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)
  • An hour of this energy healing technique is equivalent to four hours of sleep!

This Japanese healing technique can be sent as a distance healing, or in a private healing session. It is also possible to combine acupuncture and Reiki in a single session. Learn more how this healing method works at

Reiki Classes and Training
